What is Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual direction is really not about being ‘directed.’ Rather, it is about being encouraged to draw closer to God.
As professional listeners, spiritual directors are trained to work with persons on their spiritual journey. In one-on-one meetings or small group sessions, spiritual directors are available to hear where you are at in your life's journey and will ask questions to help you explore the spiritual aspects of your story. Upon request or as appropriate, spiritual directors will pray with you, suggest new ways to pray, or recommend books and other resources. Spiritual direction may help you prayerfully discern and make life choices, trust your own experience of God, work through difficult issues, and feel less alone on the spiritual journey. Spiritual direction is for all people, including those who want to deepen their relationship with God, those with questions or doubts, and those in spiritual crisis. Spiritual direction may be beneficial at any life stage, including the end of life.
Spiritual directors also serve congregations and are willing to lead classes, workshops, or prayer retreats in congregations, regional clusters, or other groups. This can be for a few hours or a full day, and includes opportunities for reflection, inspiration, silent prayer, and spiritual encouragement.
Spiritual direction is not pastoral counselling, life coaching or therapy.
"In the midst of a busy life, many people find it difficult to notice God’s action in their daily affairs. Yet, at the deepest level, all of us long for a more conscious experience of God’s presence and love."
